The use of robotics technology and its impact on the workforce is a widely discussed topic with predictions that robots will eventually replace many jobs. The casino industry is no exception.
Both offline and online gambling establishments are exploring the advantages of incorporating robots into their operations, but the way they implement this technology is different, thus, distinct differences need to be taken into account.
In this article, we will examine the similarities and differences of using robots in land-based casinos and online casinos and how it is changing the gambling industry.

Similarities in the Use of Robotics Technology

As we have said earlier, the use of robots in brick-and-mortar and virtual casinos has some similarities, as both types of casinos can benefit from increased efficiency, enhanced security, improved gameplay, and data analysis. Let’s look more closely at these moments.

Increased Efficiency
One of the main similarities between the use of robots in offline and online gambling platforms is the increased efficiency. Robots can handle repetitive tasks such as shuffling cards and dealing cards in games like poker, allowing human employees to focus on more complex responsibilities. This can lead to a more efficient operation, which can ultimately result in increased revenue for the casino.

Enhanced Security
Another similarity is enhanced security. Robots can be programmed to detect and prevent fraudulent activities such as counting cards at blackjack tables, as well as monitor the casino floor. This can provide an extra layer of security for both customers and employees.
Improved Gameplay
Robotics technology can also improve the overall gaming experience for customers. For example, robots can be used as mechanic dealers in table games, which can improve the speed and accuracy of dealing cards and other actions. Furthermore, they may assist with gameplay by identifying patterns and trends in player behavior and helping with decision-making.

Key Differences Between the Use of Robots

Although there are many similarities in the way robots are used in both physical and internet gambling houses, there are also some key distinctions between the use of them.

Physical Presence of Robots
One of the major distinctions is the physical presence of robots in offline casinos, which are designed to look like human dealers and are located in the same areas as human dealers. This enables players to interact with robots similarly to how they would interact with human dealers.
On the other hand, online casinos do not have a physical presence as all gameplay is done online. Nonetheless, robotic systems can still be utilized in online gambling through virtual dealers in live-streamed games and analysis algorithms.

Acceptance Level
A social aspect is one of the things that attracts people to land-based casinos. They get to interact with employees when they check-in, play table games, dine at restaurants or visit the spa. This is one of the reasons why offline casinos may not be well received by customers who are not accustomed to interacting with robots and prefer the traditional human dealers.
Contrarily, online casinos don’t have to worry about this as customers interact with virtual dealers. These platforms provide the option to gamble in the comfort of your own home, through a smartphone or tablet. Many online gambling operators, displayed at https://onlinecasinoaussie.com, use robotics and AI technology behind the scenes to enhance their service.

Working Flow
Another distinction is that robots in online casinos are able to work non-stop, without breaks or downtime, which improves service for customers. While offline casinos may also have the same level of availability, it may not be as efficient as a robot that can manage multiple players simultaneously, whereas human dealers are not able to.

Maintenance
The maintenance and repair of robots in offline casinos can be costly, including costs for the installation, designated areas for movement, training for employees to work alongside the robots, and regulations for safe and fair use.
In contrast, the maintenance for robots in online casinos is minimal as they are virtual and don’t require physical installation, though they must still comply with laws and regulations for online gambling.

A Final Word

In summary, while robotics technology can bring many advantages to both land-based and virtual casinos, the specific implementation and challenges faced will differ based on the type of casino. As technology continues to evolve, we can anticipate seeing more creative uses of robotics in the casino industry in the future.

Online gambling is commonly considered a form of existence for the gambling industry, some even call it a logical extension of land-based establishments. However, the truth is that the evolution of gambling could lead to the end of traditional casinos as such. This did not happen for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the willingness of gambling operators to technologically develop and improve their facilities.

Land-based casinos often look old-fashioned, for some it is part of their image, but most gambling establishment owners are still eager to technologically improve their business.

The robots are already here

The emergence of online gambling, which is in many ways more simple and convenient than its traditional version, forced the operators to rethink their global business strategy. For example, artificial intelligence, virtual reality capabilities, video games and cyber sports began to be used in casino halls. These innovations allowed gambling establishments not to lose their audience.

The first autonomous robot to handle security at SoCal Pechanga Resort Casino is named Buddy. He gallivants through the halls of the casino-hotel, likes to take selfies and exchanges short phrases with visitors.

Casino operators quickly realized that their business would only exist in the long run if they could attract the attention of older, experienced players. This audience is not interested in traditional slot machines or jackpots, its representatives have grown up in the interactive world and expect the same from their leisure time. It is thanks to the focus on experienced players that hybrid types of gambling, such as cyber sports betting, have emerged.

In this context, cyber sports should be put in a separate category at all, because people are willing to pay money to be able to watch a pro’s fight in real time and gaming session. Thus, it can be argued that traditional casinos are gradually turning into truly modern ones. But the key place in this, of course, is behind the use of robots.

Artificial or human intelligence

Despite all the charms of advanced technology, one way or another, there will be areas in which the crown of all – the human mind. For example, no matter how well-trained a computer is, there will always be someone who can beat it at chess. Artificial intelligence cannot predict the outcome of a soccer game or a game of chance, where winning depends entirely on luck.

Perspectives on poker

Given the development of modern technology, the first people who need to watch out for artificial intelligence in casinos are professional poker players. Scientists are already working on a robot player that can anticipate the opponent’s moves and calculate the odds. It should not be forgotten that robots are created by people, which means that they are no stranger to mistakes.

However, if the invasion of machines in gambling halls is inevitable, it is worth considering that full implementation of robots in casinos means a fundamental change in the security structure of the latter. Automation will always provoke cheaters to make desperate attempts to take possession of the system and use it for their own purposes.

Dealers and what to expect next

The G2E Asia 2017 exhibition foreshadowed the future of casinos. The event was held at a time when gambling establishment owners were trying to come up with an alternative to dealers. The fact is that casino dealer salaries have increased by 150% in the last 10 years. On this basis, it is not surprising that the gambling business owners pay attention to the alternative – less expensive solutions. One of them is the robot-crook Min. The technology is already being used in Macau and the United States. However, at the moment we are only talking about prototypes. It is expected that when the project is finally implemented, the robot krupier will not only be able to deal cards, but also to interact with players and detect fraud.

The other side of the coin

Robotization has become a serious problem in Las Vegas. The process of replacing employees with tech in the gambling capital of the world has already begun. Although it’s not good news for industry workers, owners and customers are happy because the work is being done more efficiently.

The bartender at Tipsy Robot in Las Vegas can make a drink in 90 seconds. In an hour, the robot can serve more than a hundred customers and make and serve about 120 cocktails.

Pechanga Resort and Casino in California decided to use robots for completely different purposes. Now it’s not humans but innovations that monitor security, and they do it 24/7.

The use of robots in Las Vegas casinos has thousands of workers in the industry worried. The future of some 38,000 bartenders, maids, cooks and croupiers is uncertain, and they are all in limbo. Some of them are convinced that the abandonment of human labor is a matter of time.

While all of the above is quite exciting, one important aspect should not be forgotten: the human factor. No matter how fast or efficient a robot can get the job done, it needs human help anyway.

The success of casino robots can be assessed in different ways. Indeed, some technologies are capable of performing human functions faster and more efficiently. We should not discount the gimmick effect and the excitement around everything unusual that we humans are so fond of creating. Among other advantages of robots there is only one significant drawback – nothing in this world can replace human communication. At least for now.

In the modern world, gaming companies collect massive amounts of data on their customers, and one of the latest technologies that came into help and are starting to be used more and more often in the online gambling industry is AI. The term “AI” stands for artificial intelligence. AI creates machines that can think and learn independently, and perform tasks that only humans can perform. AI can be used in different ways to help improve the online gambling experience, create better algorithms for games, provide customer support, help to identify problem gamblers, help to keep customers’ personal data safe, help to identify cheaters and help to track player behaviour and preferences. So, as you can see, there are a number of reasons why AI usage can be beneficial for the casino and online gambling industry. With the help of AI, casinos can better understand how marketing works for their users and better understand what marketing strategies are effective. Using AI helps casinos and betting companies identify potential clients, those potential players to market to. It helps to understand what marketing offers work best.

How AI helps to improve the gaming experience

The modern casino industry is gigantic and it keeps growing every day. It has always been on the cutting edge of technology. Online casinos constantly adopt new technologies to help improve the users’ gaming experience. For example, some casinos use AI-powered VR technology to create realistic casino environments. This allows the player to get a taste of what it would be like to visit a real casino without ever having to leave their home. Some game providers use AI to create game characters in casino games that act and react realistically to the player’s actions. While others use AI to create game environments that are more realistic and believable. The AI can help with recommendations for game providers with games that might be of interest to the player. The AI can track the player’s behaviour, actions, patterns and preferences. This can, in turn, help to create a more personalized experience for each individual player, which will keep the players engaged and coming back for more. The AI can provide tons of data about the player and his preferences for the casino, which in turn will help the casino to better understand which games are more popular among players and why. This will also help the casino in understanding what content is better to use for the players to be satisfied.

How AI helps with customer service

Today, one of the most effective ways that AI is being used in the online casino and gambling industry is the customer service area. When you visit most of the modern online casino websites, you can see that these platforms are using AI-powered chatbots that help to provide customer service to their users on a 24/7 basis. By understanding common issues and questions, AI can provide quick and accurate responses to players. These chatbots can answer the most frequently asked questions, explain the rules of games, provide information about all the services provided by the casino, explain the privacy policy and user agreement, help to solve account problems, answer questions about licences etc. Most of the troubles and questions that a user is having are very common and repeatable. This means that a solution for these troubles and questions is most likely the same for everyone and, in this case, can be provided by AI-powered chatbots in just a few minutes. In this case, a customer is satisfied with the immediate results and this helps to improve the user’s experience.

Although, there are still some complications that need to be considered when using AI in the casino industry. The accuracy of the data must be perfect in order for the AI to provide effective results and service. And this can be quite challenging when there are real people’s behaviour and experience to be taken into account because people can be very unpredictable. AI needs to be able to adapt to changes in the data, which can be difficult because the data may change over time, and the AI may need to learn new patterns before it will be able to complete its tasks effectively. And while artificial intelligence is constantly evolving and improving itself, it can have a major impact on the online casino industry. By providing more personalized experiences, AI can help online casinos to stand out from their competitors.

Robotics company Rethink Robotics has made a name for itself with the Baxter industrial robot, which is designed specifically to work on conveyor lines. It adapts and learns, and is faster than any human.

Sawyer is a new generation of robot on the same platform as Baxter. And it has the same screen with a friendly face.

It is a robot with a manipulator arm, designed for assembling electronics and other devices requiring high-precision manipulation.

Sawyer borrowed from its predecessor a system of built-in sensors and a self-learning mechanism. It uses the same Intera software platform, so it can dynamically adjust to the necessary requirements, just as humans do. The software is updated every four months, so the robot constantly has new abilities.

According to the manufacturer, Baxter and Sawyer together can cover 90 percent of all jobs that cannot be automated by existing methods.

The Sawyer weighs 19 kg and has a payload of up to 4 kg. It has “seven degrees of freedom,” the Baxter says (it’s not quite clear what degrees of freedom they mean) and has a reach of one meter.

The Sawyer’s special feature is the high precision of movement of the manipulator, which was made possible thanks to the built-in “head” camera with illumination and a system of pattern recognition. The software recognizes various objects and can, for example, scan barcodes.

The Sawyer retails for $29,000 (the Baxter cost $22,000). Such a machine can be bought not only by industrial enterprises, but also by rich citizens. For example, to have it cook food and do other household chores. For example, the mechanical arm is able to assemble furniture, iron the cat, and do other important things.

There are several classifications of industrial robots: by type of control, by degree of mobility, by application and specificity of operations.

According to the type of control:

Controlled robots: require an operator to control their every movement. Not widespread due to narrow fields of application. They are not exactly robots.

Automatic and semi-autonomous robots: they act strictly according to a preset program, often have no sensors and are unable to correct their actions and cannot do without a worker.

Autonomous: they can perform a programmed cycle of actions without human intervention, according to predefined algorithms and correcting their actions as needed. Such robots are able to completely cover the field of activities on their part of the conveyor, without the involvement of a live workforce.

By function and scope of application:

Robots are divided by purpose and performed functions, here are just some of them: industrial robots are universal, welding, machine tools, cutting, picking, assembly, packaging, storage, painting.

This list is not complete: the number of all kinds of variants is constantly growing and it is impossible to list them all in one article. The only thing you can say with confidence is that there is hardly an area of human activity where robots couldn’t make human labor more creative by taking all the monotonous and dangerous parts of work by themselves.

Other methods of classification

Every encyclopedia, every reference book and every manufacturer has its own classification and typology of robots. Not surprisingly, it is often determined by the strictly specific needs and private approach of whoever makes it.

Does this prevent us from looking at some examples and understanding what they can do? No, of course not.

This is the first robot in a family of affordable and intelligent robots under development that can perform simple manufacturing tasks.

The robot is capable of performing typical operations: sorting, loading/unloading, packing/unpacking, grinding, polishing, etc.
The robot performs these operations by means of two manipulators, each with seven degrees of freedom.
At the moment, there are two models of working grippers: parallel plates and suction cups (there are plans to develop additional tools).
Baxter is not as strong and fast as conventional industrial robots, but its main feature is quick learnability and adaptability.

To teach the robot to recognize an object, just hold it in front of the robot cameras located in the head, chest and at the ends of both arms-manipulators, and to program the robot action, just take it by the hand and show the required movements (the required actions are selected using a pair of switches located on the wrists of the manipulators).

Trials of robot prototypes in several small U.S. companies, in manufacturing and assembly, have shown that the robots can work at the equivalent of about $4 per hour.

Industrial robots are particularly used in industries where precision and speed are required. They successfully replace humans when performing dangerous or monotonous operations or when working in corrosive environments.

Automotive industry

Today, it is a leader in introducing robotics into production processes. For example, the Hungarian company AUDI Hungary produces cars using Fanuc robots. Robots for laser and plasma cutting are used at Renault factories in France.

Electronics manufacturing

ALNEA Sp. z.o.o.. – a renowned manufacturer of test equipment, uses a KUKA KR 6 R900 for soldering printed circuit boards. As a result, lead times are halved.

A number of companies use a six-axis Yaskawa Motoman MH12 robot manipulator to assemble computer hard drives.

Food industry

Atria Scandinavia is a Swedish company that makes vegetarian products. Packaging, labeling and stacking are handled by UR 10 manipulators. They handle more than 200 items per hour on each production line.

Agriculture

Some robots can harvest crops. For example, Agrobot SW6010 uses sensors and manipulators to detect and pick ripe strawberries. The Vegebot system, which is designed to pick lettuce, includes the UR10 robotic arm with six degrees of freedom.

Conclusion

These days, the concept of “competitiveness” and the concept of “automation” are often equated. Modern robots are cost-effective, even for small organizations, because they improve work conditions, productivity, and product quality. Their costs are quickly recouped.

Thus, industrial robots can be easily integrated into any production processes, hence their development and implementation significantly expand the possibilities and prospects of robotics.
